The Journey is a playful intervention made for people with post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), alcohol addiction or other mental health conditions. It was commissioned by Co-operation eLab, which is a collaboration between different healthcare providers. They focus on joint development of digital products for mental healthcare with the aim to accelerate innovation within the mental healthcare sector.
Many people suffering from a mental health condition struggle with gaining control over their lives. They are in great need for an intervention that helps them to assess their emotional state on a daily basis and set reachable goals for themselves.
The app is built on the principle of the Window of Tolerance. This is the optimal zone of arousal where we are able to manage and thrive in everyday life. Within this optimal zone there is room for reflection, learning and progress. Players gain insight in how daily situations may affect their arousal level and mood. It is important that the game invites players to set goals, translate them into clear actions and provides long-term motivation.
The app uses various playful elements such as a place to look back at everything they have accomplished (the wall of success), rewards and bonuses. They are also guided by a virtual coach that stimulates players to use the app on a daily basis. The Journey helps people with a mental health condition in a fun and engaging way. Through the app they discover different techniques that will help them to manage their mood, feel good and realise the future they want for themselves, step by step.
The Journey has been developed in close collaboration with people that suffer from PTSD and alcohol addiction. By closely involving the target group an app was developed that perfectly fits their needs. This helps with increasing the acceptance and impact of the app.
